Yes, you heard right! How about a little field trip?

As a small business owner it can often be hard to “think-outside-the-box” when you are steeped with work, juggling the demands of daily business operations, management and leadership while trying to come up with creative ways to run a business. Does that sound familiar to you?

As entrepreneurs continue to attend roundtables, forums, networking sessions, workshops, or form discussion groups in the hopes of coming away from the experience, inspired, and motivated to make some much needed changes in the way they handle business, why not schedule a field trip to a local business to get those creative juices flowing?

There’s a lot that you can take away from businesses that are not similar to your own. And it could also be beneficial to schedule one of these every quarter, if not every month (if possible), to generate some creative ideas on how other businesses are innovating or coping with similar problems.

But as you ponder this idea and decide to meet with a local business of choice, be candid about your intentions when you schedule a meeting with the CEO or owner of the business. You never know, they just may even be able to provide you with solutions to some of those pesky little problems through your interaction during the field trip.

Trying to decide on the optimal keywords to use for website SEO can often be daunting and painstaking. The latest tool provided by Google may just be what you need to trigger keywords/phrases that would be most suitable for use on your website or any other searchable sites. Google’s Wonder Wheel mind maps the search terms and phrases and provides you with alternatives to the direct search term that you use to describe the products or services. It is remarkable! Give it a shot.

Green seems to be the color du jour these days. The Obama administration promises to create a green economy. There are businesses that are sprouting on a daily basis and jumping on the green bandwagon. We are more conscientious than ever before about our carbon footprint, and the effects that we, as individuals, or we, as a society have on the environment. To prove our committment to being green, and work towards a greener planet, we need to seek these green proponents out. Where are these so-called green businesses, or jobs? How do we find them? How do we know if these businesses are hiring, and if there are jobs available for those of us that are looking to follow-through on fulfilling the green dream?

There are several organizations that point you to alternative resources but here’s one that actually maps green businesses that focus on renewable energy and those that are focused on energy efficiency in 12 states, with a promise to include more in the future. If green is the way you want to go and if you are in the market for a job, this just may be the place to start your green job search, or pitch an innovative idea to one of the green businesses in this current state of heightened green market awareness!

“Reality” Mining and Just-in-time Marketing! May 4, 2008

What is it and how it is used? A fascinating article in the May 2008 Business week recently caught my eye. The gist of the article points to the potential of harvesting data from wireless devices that are equipped with GPS chips, as in the case of our cellular phones. The phones, if left on, can track usage patterns which creates a digital record of the users movements, the length of their stay and who they are getting in touch with. The information gathered by these means, if used ethically, can be a huge benefit to companies and humanity.

In the past, cellular companies who own this information have not used it for fear of alientaing subscribers and also due to privacy infringements. As the viability and marketing potential of the information increases, cellular companies are begining to collaborate with business partners to market their respective products based on location and calling habits for just-in-time marketing. There are many other just-in-time applications for this information and the wireless medium and it is only a matter of time before it becomes another “viral” advertising medium!

The potential for “Reality” mining is only begining …..
